2007.3.24 Epiphany book club meeting minute for One L
Today in our meeting, we had four members to share our ideas about the law and the life of One L. Mark joined the second round meeting later.
Book of the month: "One L" by Scot Turow
Participants: Josh, Khan, Minah, Smile, Mark.
Venue: Gangnam Toz
Date and Time: 10:00-13:00, Mar 24(Sat), 2007
First, we had a time to talk about first impression/favorite words for opening session.
I read the book almost 3 years ago. One of the character says, learning a law is like learning a foreign language. I couldn't agree more to what he said.
My favorite words is that "The law is at war with ambiguity, with uncertainty"(p264)
Minah shared her favorite words like this one " A more humane and humanistic education in the law strikes me as far more fitting than a schooling characterized by terror and the supression of feeling for those persons who, in time, will become this society's chief custodians of justice." (p265). Josh states his one with " commitment of attorney"
Second, in the main session, we dealt with 3 discussion questions like below;
1. What is the real meaning of "meeting my enemy". Who are considered to be enemy in the book?.
What we found out is that class mates, professors, and future one on court can be the enemy the author meant. One of the members suggested that me myself can also be the enemy.
2. What is Socratic method?, what is the purpos of the method.
Socratic method was introduced by Dean Langdell who thought the Method is an effective way to give legal education to more students. Adaptation of the method is motivated by economics of legal education.
3. What about legal education in Korea. Whas we need to improve our judicial system.
Khan suggested that we need a jury system to improve our system in our society.
Last, we talked about our next book, "Blink". We agreed to hold a bookclub meeting during weekday. It was an intensive meeting we had today. Thanks for all participants.
