어제 반디에서 josh를 만나 모임에 대해 여러가지 이야기를 나누었다. 그리고 책 하나를 빌렸는데, 17세기 유럽 네델란드에서 무역을 하는 상인들에 대한 이야기 이다. 이제 막 커피를 통한 무역을 하기 위해, 여자가 남자에게 커피를 맛보라고 하면서 이렇게 말한다.

"This is what I think. Beer and wine may make a man sleepy, but coffee will make him awake and clearheaded. Beer and wine may make a man amorous, but coffee will make him lose in teterest in the flesh. The man who drinks coffee fruit cares only for his business. 커피를 먹으면, 정말 남자는 머리가 맑아지고, 사업에만 신경쓰게 될까? 지극히 의심스럽지만, 나름 처음 커피가 거래되었을 때, 사람들이 커피를 대해서 가진 생각을 읽어볼 수 있을 듯.
이 책은 첫 페이지도 주인공, Miguel Lienzo(유대인, 상인)이 커피를 처음 맛보는 장면으로 시작한다.
It rippled thickly in the bowl, dark and hot and uninviting. Miguel Lienzo picked it up and pulled it so close he almost dipped his nose into the tarry liquid.
Holding the vessel still for an instant, he breathed in, pulling the scent deep into his lungs. The sharp odor of earth and rank leaves surprised him; it was like somehting an apothecary might keep in a chipped pocelain jar.
이 책을 읽으면서, 다시 한번 커피 맛을 음미하게 되었다. 처음 커피를 마신 사람들은 어떤 느낌이었을까? 상당히 신비롭고 처음 느껴보는 신비한 맛. 과연 그럴까?
Miguel squinted into the blackness. " It looks like the devil's piss, which would certainly be extraordinary, but I've no desire to know what it tastes like."
악마의 오줌이라니. 재밌는 상상력이다.
