[스크랩] 영어원서읽기: 모르는 단어가 넘 많을 때

영어원서읽기를 할 때, 모르는 단어가 많으면 어떻게 해야할까?

 

위의 질문은 영어원서를 읽는 독자 누구나 한번쯤 생각해보는 문제가 아닐까 싶다.

 

2009년 3월 에피파니 모임에 참석한 멤버들은 하나같이 이달의 선정도서(Aloft)가 단어 때문에 읽기가 무지 어려웠다고 이야기하였다. 첫페이지부터 nifty, gnarly, macadam, runelike, sheen등 모르는 단어 투성이다. 두번째 페이지도 persnickety, uprush, clump, priapic 휴~, 마찬가지로 모르는 단어가 적어도 5~10개 정도 눈에 보인다. 이걸 어떻게 다 찾으면서 읽나? 선택은 둘중 하나이다.

첫번째-모르는 단어가 있더라도 찾지않고 그냥 읽는다. 조금 지나면 무척 답답해진다. 내가 제대로 이해하고 있는건지 슬슬 회의가 몰려오기 시작한다. 그러나 이야기 진도가 쑥쑥나가니, 그래도 계속 책을 읽게 된다.

 

두번째- 모르는 단어는 반드시 찾는다-영어는 공부다. 모르는 것을 어찌 그냥 놔두나. 영어사전과 책을 번갈아가면 모르는 단어에 표시를 하고 하나하나 사전을 찾고 노트에 정리한다. 점점 이야기에 흥미를 잃어버린다. 계속 읽어야 될지 고민한다. 책을 덮는다.

 

개인적으로 처음 책을 읽기 시작할 때는 두번째 방법을 많이 사용했는데, 어느 순간 첫번째로 바뀌었다. 일단 모르는 단어 무시하고 넘어간다. 그러다 자꾸 반복되는 단어(적어도 5번이상)는 한 두번씩 찾아준다. 그리고 계속 이야기 흐름을 따라 읽는다.

 

경험적으로 이야기하면, “모르는 단어가 나와도 일단 꾹 참고 한번만 읽어보면, 두번째 읽을 때부터는 단어가 조금씩 잡히게 된다.” 그리고 책의 특성상 현재 모르는 단어라도, 다른 책을 읽다가도, 아니면 어느 정도 시간이 흘러, 다시 책을 잡게 되면, 예전에 단어를 몰라 답답했던 책도 어느새 단어가 보이게 되고 그래서 내용이 보이기 시작한다.

 

등산과 좀 비슷한 면이 있는 것 같다. 처음 시작할 때는 내가 가는 이 길이 제대로 가는 건지, 내가 지금 어디쯤 있는 건지 몹시 답답하다. 그러나 점점 고도가 높아질수록, 조금씩 경치가 보이기 시작하고, 내가 지나온 길이 보이면서, 여유를 갖고 지나온 길과 가야 할 길을 바라보게 된다. 영어원서 읽기도 마찬가지 인 것 같다. 책 한권이 하나의 산을 오르는 과정이 될 수도 있고, 영어원서읽기 전체 경험이 등산의 과정이 될수도 있다. 한걸음 한걸음이 정상을 향한 발걸음이 되듯, 한권 한권 자신이 읽은 영어원서의 책이 쌓이다보면, 어느덧 원서읽기를 즐기고 있는 자신의 모습을 발견할 것이다.

 

내가 좋아하는 책 중에 <연금술사(The Alchemist)>가 있는데, 그 중의 한 이야기: 행복의 비밀(The Secret of Happiness)도 영어원서읽기에 참고할 만한 깨달음을 주고 있다.

“A certain shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the world. The lad wandered through the desert for forty days, and finally came upon a beautiful castle, high atop a mountain. It was there that the wise man lived....중간생략.

 

The wise man listened attentively to the boy’s explanation of why he had come, but told him that he did’t have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.

 

Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something, said the wise man, handing the boy a tea spoon that held two drops of oil. ‘As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill.’

 

The boy began climbing and descending the many stairways of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to the room where the wise man was.

 

‘Well, did you see the Persian tapestries that are hanging in my dining hall? Did you see the garden that it took the master gardener ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful parchments in my library?

 

The boy was embarrassed, and confessed that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil that the wise man had entrusted to him.

 

‘Then go back and observe the marvels of my world. You cannot trust a man if you don’t know his house.’

 

Relieved, the boy picked up the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace, this time observing all of the works of art on the cellings and the walls. He saw the gardens, the mountains all around him, the beauty of the flowers, and the taste with which everything had been selected. Upon returning to the wise man, he related in detail everything he had seen.

 

‘But where are the drops of oil I entrusted to you? Asked the wise man.

Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone.

 

‘Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you. Said the wisest of wise men. ‘The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.

영어원서읽기를 하되, 단어에 얽매여, 책이주는 즐거움, 기쁨, 지식, 지혜등을 놓치면 안된다.
