Summer Lies 독서/북클럽 후기
"The Reader"의 저자 Bernhard Schlink의 단편소설집 "Summer Lies"를 읽었다. 책을 추천했던 승민씨는 참석하지못했다. 단편소설은 장편과 달리 플롯이 단순하고 등장인물도 평면적이다. 그러나 이 책은 흥미로운 7개의 에피소드가 무지개의 스펙트럼처럼 펼쳐졌다.
먼저 제목의 의미와 책커버에 대한 질문을 하였다. 제목에서처럼, 이 책은 각 에피소드별 주인공들의 거짓말을 다룬다. 그 거짓말이 자신을 향한 것이든, 연인이나 가족을 향한 것이든, 거짓말은 삶을 깨뜨리는 역할을 한다.
Every episodes revolve around lies respective characters tell to their family or lovers.
왜 거짓말은 이렇게 강력할까? 두번째 에피소드(The Night in Baden-Baden)의 등장인물 앤의 말을 들어보자.
I can't live with lies. My father lied to my mother, he cheated on her and he made promise after promise to my brother and me that he never kept. When I asked him why, he got mad and yelled at me. During my entire childhood I never once had solid ground beneath my feet. You need to tell me the truth so that I've got solid ground beneath my feet. Do you understand? Do you promise? (p.47, Anne)
(거짓말은 삶의 확실한 토대인 신뢰를 깨뜨린다. 아버지의 불륜과 가족을 향한 공허한 약속은 앤을 지치게 한다. 어린시절, 아빠의 거짓말로 인해 단단한 삶의 토대를 가져보지 못했다는 앤의 고백은 삶이 신뢰라는 단단한 땅에 기초한 것임을 상기시킨다. 진실은 단단한 토대이며, 거짓을 바로 이 토대를 무너뜨리는 것임을 말이다.)

삶을 깨뜨리는 것은 거짓말 뿐이 아니다. 때로는 진실을 감추는 것도 주변사람에겐 큰 상처가 된다.
다섯번째 에피소드(The Last Summer)에서 평생을 같이한 부인과 가족들에게, 자신의 시한부 삶을 알리지 않고 약을 먹고 잠자듯이 세상을 하직하려고 했던 토마스는 아래와 같이 아내에게 엄청난 질책을 듣게 된다.
You didn't have a lover, but the way you've betrayed me now is no better, in fact it's worse. ...a good way to say goodbye? You go, and I don't know you're going? That's supposed to be a good way? It's no way to say goodbye, and it's definitely not one I'm going to accept. And you're not saying goodbye to me, you're not saying goodbye to yourself, and you want me there to act as a sort of movie extra. (p.165)
(당신은 바람을 피지는 않았지만, 나를 배신한 방식은 훨씬 나뻐요. 이별을 하는 좋은 방법이라구요? 당신이 죽었는데, 난 당신이 왜 죽는지도 모르는게 좋은 방식인가요. 작별의 인사를 하지 않는게 좋은 방법은 아니지요. 전 받아들일 수 없어요. 내게도 당신에게도 작별의 인사도 안하다니요.. 당신은 나를 영화의 엑스트라로 만들었어요.)
아래는 작품속의 캐릭터를 읽다가 실제 북클럽 멤버가 생각나서 정리한 글이다. 이 작품에서 처럼, 내가아는 멤버도 교통전문가이다. 책을 늘 내 주변의 사람들과 사회 그리고 세상을 돌아본게 한다.
