The Valkyries 책을 사다

파울로 코엘료 책읽기 마지막 책을 샀다.

 

 

 

The Valkyries-어떻게 제목을 읽어야 할지 막막하다. 현재까지 영어로 번역된 파울로 코엘료의 작품은 11개, 그 중에 국내에서 구할 수 있는 책은 Warrior of The Light: A Manual을 제외한 10권이다. 그 중에 위 책은 교보문고에서 찾을 수 없어, 오늘 반디앤루니에서 책을 샀다.

 

마지막 책이라 감회가 남다르다. 책 뒤커버를 보니, 아래와 같은 글이 있다.

이 책의 주인공은 Paulo 이다. 작가가 실명 그대로 나온다. Paulo는 아내 Chris와 함께, 스승 J가 내린 미션을 수행하기 위해 브라질에서 미국의 모하비 사막(Mojave Desert)으로 간다. 그리고 아내 Chris는 파울로와의 지난 여정을 회상한다. 그런데, 내용을 읽어보니, 작가의 또 다른 작품 "The Pilgrimage"에 나오는 장면과 연결되는듯하다. 작가의 삶과 소설이 현실공간과 가상공간에서 만나고 엮어지는 것처럼 보였다.

 

She was used to going with him to certain places, and had once even carried his sword for purposes of a ceremony. She knew the Road to Santiago...(p.25)

 

(그녀는 그와 어떤 장소를 동행하곤 했다, 그리고 한번은 심지어 의식의 일환으로 그의 검을 가지고 간적도 있었다. 그녀는 산티아고로 가는 길을 알고 있었다)

 

제목(Valyries)이 뜻하는 바가 무엇일까?

Chris는 책방에서  "Valkyries: the nymphs at Wotan's palace"라는 책을 찾아본다.

 

Messengers of the gods, they led heroes to their death-and then to paradice.

They excite combatants with the love that their charm excites in their hearts,and through the example of bravery at the battlefront, mounted on steeds as fast as the clouds and as deafening as a thunderstorm.At the same time, they symbolize both the inebriation of courage and rest for the warrior, the adventure of love in battle,encounter, and loss.(p.87)

Valkyries

The Valkyries ("Choosers of the Slain") are beautiful young women, mounted upon winged horses and armed with helmets and spears. Odin needs many brave warriors for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok, and the Valkyries scout the battlefields to choose the bravest of those who have been slain. They escort these heroes, called the Einherjar to Valhalla, Odin's hall.

The Valkyries are also Odin's messengers and when they ride forth on their errands, their armor causes the strange flickering light that is called "Aurora Borealis" (Northern Lights).

Some of the Valyries are Brynhildr, Göll, Göndul, Gudr, Gunn, Herfjoturr, Hildr, Hladgunnr, Hlokk, Hrist, Sigrdrifa, Sigrún, and Svafa.

Old Norse: Valkyrja. An 8th and 9th century term for them is Wælcyrge.
